Green Thumb: The Pencil Cactus

We mention to Rebecca MacLachlin of Poppies that we’re looking for houseplants that are easily grown in condos and she leads us, enthusiastically, to a great, towering, spiky-green, indoor jungle of a plant called A Pencil Cactus. We like its pleasing complexity of design–which is almost architectural. “It’s very easy to look after,” says MacLachlin (this is music to our ears).  “It needs bright light–a window facing south, for example–and only very little water” (it is a cactus, after all). How much is a little?”‘ we ask her. “You should probably water it every four weeks or so,” she says. We believe we can handle that.
